Many people today are interested in learning to blacksmith which is great to see the enthusiasm. There is something very compelling about fire and hitting hot metal. The feel of shaping metal is very rewarding.
- Remember that the temperatures can easily reach over 3000F.
- Tools are often heavy and need to be properly secured.
- Metal tools do hold and transfer the heat (especially to fingers).
- Hardened metal striking hardened metal can cause shards to fly forcefully.
- There are also sharp edges on tools that in conjunction with other heavy moving tools presents cutting hazards (especially to fingers).
- Risks of carbon monoxide poisoning are real.
- Heating metals with zinc and galvanized coatings is a SERIOUS health risk (Deadly serious).
- Grinding dust is not healthy to breathe.
- Safety glasses, proper clothing, hearing protection, breathing protection cannot be afterthoughts.
Blacksmithing can be very rewarding if appropriate caution is taken. I highly recommend seeking out an organization or individual who can teach you the basics and point you in a safe and fun direction.
