History

Ferrous Engineering has been long in coming. Blacksmithing as a hobby as given me an opportunity to create many objects. It has also given me an opportunity to interact with people through many public demonstrations. Turning the hobby into a business was a natural progression.

Ferrous Engineering, LLC is finally official. The progression from hobby to business has been discussed for years. Now it is reality. Ferrous Engineering (Fe) is the fruit of my passion for blacksmithing.

I have always been handy with tools and enjoy working with my hands. Part of my home duties included routine repairs around the house.  I also found time to tinker in my shop but I was looking for a regular hobby. An opportunity to buy a 15 lb jewelers anvil led me to try to shape hot metal. A few months later was a fateful trip to Colonial Williamsburg that included a stop at the blacksmith shop and a chance to talk to one of the blacksmiths in more detail. I found out about a local blacksmith club (the Blacksmith Guild of Central Maryland, www.bgcmonline.org) that also taught blacksmithing classes (at the Carroll County Farm Museum). A few months later I was taking one of those classes, Beginner’s Blacksmithing.

Through the club I got to meet and work with other smiths. I took the opportunity to be a public demonstrator at the Carroll County Farm Museum (Home Page – Carroll County Farm Museum). Being a blacksmith demonstrator has led me demonstrate at the Sandy Spring Museum and at the Howard County Living Farm Heritage Museum (http://www.farmheritage.org/). I was also able to work with other smiths at various craft shows. All the time learning and practicing the art and craft of blacksmithing.

Like many hobbies the growth was slow as the purchase of equipment was spread over time. I quickly came to truly enjoy blacksmithing. My love of science combined with my passion for blacksmithing shows when I do a public demonstration. I always tried to educate as well as entertain while using my chemistry background as a framework to provide knowledge to a modern audience about the art and craft of blacksmithing. I always try to keep the learning fun.

I had been discussing turning my hobby into a business for many years so now Ferrous Engineering, LLC is here. Keep track of Ferrous Engineering as this site will grow with pictures of various projects past and present. And check the blog for the next craft show to come watch me practice blacksmithing in a public venue.
